Edwin Lim, World Bank's First Chief Representative in China, Recalled the 1985 Bashanlun Conference with Fond Memories

On May 16, ICC Director General Cao Wenlian visited World Bank's first chief representative in China and eminent overseas Chinese Mr. Edwin R.Lim (pinyin: Lin Chonggeng). They exchanged views on the forthcoming International Conference on Macroeconomics in Commemoration of the 30th Anniversary of the 1985 Yangtze River Cruise Conference (Bashanlun Conference), China's "Belt and Road Initiatives" and other issues.

As a key initiator of the 1985 Yangtze River Cruise Conference, Lim published a memoir in honor of the monumental conference, which prefaced the 2008 book Thirty Years in the Eyes of Chinese Economists Fifty Forum. In his conversation with Cao Wenlian, Lim recalled with fond memories the historical circumstances and significance of the 1985 conference, and expressed regret for not being able to attend this year’s conference. He recommended two foreign experts to participate in this year's meeting, and discussed with Cao issues related to China’s “Belt and Road” strategy. As a Chinese-Philippine of Fujian descent, Lim was concerned about Fujian's development, and expressed wish to visit Fujian at an opportune time. Cao, himself a Fujian native, invited Lim to explore Fujian at his convenience.

Pan Xin and Huang Hongyu from the Information Office were present at the meeting.
